Mark was a 26 year old newly appointed Middle Manager and circumstances led him to take responsibility of a very negative, hostile and difficult unit manager called Derek.
The reason why Mark took over the branch was because Derek took out a grievance against the previous Middle Manager. Rightly or wrongly the company decided to give the business unit to a different Middle Manager and Mark got the challenge.
The reason why Derek was so negative and hostile towards the company was that he had been passed over for a middle management role on numerous occasions an now he had reached his forties he was very unhappy with his current career position. Derek’s poor performance and behaviour was undoubtedly the reason why the business unit had under-performed for a long time.
Mark had no choice but to address Derek’s negative performance and behaviour but how was he going to do this without Derek again taking out a grievance against his new Middle Manager?
This is where our Manager Performance coach helped. Following a 1 day, one-on-one training and coaching session in performance management, assertiveness, counselling, objective setting and report writing, Mark was able to deal with the issue confidently, quickly and professionally.
Derek left the company six weeks after Mark took over the business unit. In a short time the unit began to perform above the company average rather than below the company average. It was estimated that Derek had been costing the company in excess of 100k lost sales each year.
